Barquee doesn't work properly in Leopard, but after much searching I have found a tiny program called iTunesMenu that does what I want -- which is a non-obtrusive static display in the menu bar so that I can look up and see what's playing.

Barquee scrolls the track/artist info continually (that's the whole point).
As does iController and Quicktunes
YoucontrolTunes does not do this, it only scrolls for the first 10s or so, meaning that if you miss this "window" it's not as usefull. The colour of the scrolling font is not configurable either.

If you want to be able to glance up and at any point in the song, easily see what's playing without having to move your cursor anywhere or clicking anywhere, then any of Barq/iCon/QuickT is the app for you.

Having said that, I completely agree that otherwise, the rest of YoucontrolTunes is a very slick app indeed, with only slightly more resource usage...very good for a freeware app

Try - YouControl Tunes. Its free and does the same.

Better scrolling in the menu bar (more customisable) than iController, but isn't free.
