Boxee Is XBMC with Newer Look and Social Flair, and many new functions.

boxee is a social media center. with boxee you can play videos, music and pictures from your PC or from the Internet. you can also share with your friends what albums you're listening to, what movies and TV shows you're watching, send recommendations and more.

boxee is designed to work with a remote control (it looks great on a big screen TV), but you can also control it using your keyboard.

once installed boxee will start scanning your local Movies, Music and Pictures folders automatically. boxee will attempt to bring artwork, reviews, cast, etc. for your media, so browsing your library becomes more useful and fun than looking at a list of files.

boxee is based on the best media center on the planet, xbmc.

10 Opinions

Plex is prettier and better to watch your movie collection, however Boxee has interesting apps (add-ons), eg: Flickr, Tumblr, Youtube, RSS Feeds.

But some of them are buggy, eg:
Youtube: plays HD videos from youtube in SD quality (even after I clicked the 'HD' label in the top right corner) radios don't work

Love it. This app is the center of my HTPC

Installed and, like other users, realized is a resource hog. This is like flash player; a battery drainer and in case you have a plugged device, will burn it if you keep it for long hours.

Indeed a very promising app, but it continues to have a high cpu footprint on my system - the fans speed up and make a lot of noise. Apart from that the most annoying thing is the inability to switch to other apps while watching a movie. Nevertheless… an impressive app which will become a great media center.

Tried the OS X version and it shows promise but I found one glaring problem: it forces fullscreen and you can't CMD-TAB or Expose out of it (tip: if you use Little Snitch set your rules to allow all before you use it) and if you quit you might get a clean exit, and then again you might not. It's still in alpha but an important aspect that it not be intrusive, so hopefully they will fix this soon.

a beautiful app, with some hitches with the full screen resolution handling on my 40" LCD TV + my MacBook ...

really promising, and more "clever" than Apple's FrontRow app.

I tried this instead of XBMC, and I love it. I have it linked to my netflix and my hulu accounts. I love that it works with the apple remote, and is customizable. I think it's better than the plain xbmc.

I downloaded it to try. Very promising, but has crashed on me every time.

I use this all the time as my main media center, its not perfect but with the exception of the music part, its perfectly usable. Download it and enjoy the community.

Nice approach, but still very very buggy though. One should consider that it's still in its alpha-release days. The interface is nice and logical, the functions are also far beyond apple's front row, but it lacks stybility big time. Give it a try in a couple of releases...
