Seems like a better way to encrypt files is password protecting them inside a zip or rar file. You don't have to worry about compatibility. Just having the password is enough.
I'm using BetterZip (quite easy and uses AES 256) but it's not freeware/Open Source.
I find BitEncrypt (also freeware http://osx.iusethis.com/app/bitencrypt) very similar. Are they a front end for GnuPG ?
