Default Folder X

Version: 4.2 || Release Date: 2009-04-03 || License: Shareware ($34.95)

Recently rated 5 mice by MacUser UK and 4.5 mice by Macworld, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application. The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also fixes a number of problems in Open and Save dialogs, "rebounding" back to the last selected file, putting the path listing back in the top menu, and correcting bugs in scrolling column views.

my mileage varies =;^>. in my workflow, this utility is not nearly as useful as in pre-OSX days when i treasured it so much i bought a license! when i began using OSX this utility was not immediately compatible and i gradually grew to live without it. but when i used it most recently in trial mode, i experienced daily crashes that only stopped when i quit running the utility.

I seriously cannot imagine using my Mac without this, it's become that essential. The addition of the preview pane (to make up for Apple's lackluster preview) is a godsend, and the ability to add spotlight comments in the save dialog rocks. Oh yeah, and you can trash things right from the open or save dialog.

This app will change the way (and the speed) you work. Right next to Quicksilver this must be the most valuable addon to Mac OSX. Forget browsing your hard disk every time you open or save a file, Default Folder X does all the thinking for you! And clicking through all your windows to find open finder windows? Shear brilliance!

love it. After having used it for a while now, I can't imagine not having it as part of my daily routine. I love being able to add spotlight comments right in the save dialog.

With the 4.0.1 update, the best really did get better. What's great is that the option to turn off visual effects has now been moved to the main preferences dialog - previously you had to option-click the preferences button to get to it as a hidden option...a boon to users on lower-end systems.

andrullas, what bad experience did you have with our tech support? I have to say, we try VERY hard to do the right thing when it comes to supporting our customers. That said, we were also getting hundreds of emails a day right after the release of 4.0, so perhaps something slipped somewhere? Please contact me at support@stclairsoft.com and let me know what happened.

Thanks - Jon

Yes, I like it, and use it ... but I will never get in touch with St. Clair Softwares support again! They got a really bad attitude there ... And whatever you do, dont upgrade to 4.0, its full of bugs! 3.06 works just fine with Leopard.

I could not function without this app, worth every penny...my experience is very few bugs, new version operates much FASTER on osx 10.5.1
