Default Folder X

Version: 5.0.6 || Release Date: 2016-08-30 || License: Shareware ($34.95) App Owner: stclairsoft

Recently rated 5 mice by MacUser UK and 4.5 mice by Macworld, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application. The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also fixes a number of problems in Open and Save dialogs, "rebounding" back to the last selected file, putting the path listing back in the top menu, and correcting bugs in scrolling column views.

Nope it in the latest update.(

I was wrong: Default Folder X does give me all sorts of useful features that are not redundant. And besides, I missed it a lot when I turned it off for a while. It's amazing to me how it became a natural part of workflow without even realizing it. I also see how it helps Spotlight search work better and better as I use DFX's tagging feature more. It makes tagging process so much easier and quicker. I'm sticking to DFX, and I'm not changing my review this time. :)

Changing my review... Since the last review I have discovered that more than half of the features are pretty much redundant and I was able to come up with simple workarounds for the rest. Not really necessary to have it at this point.

Happened to grab it with a MUPromo Bundle last year. Pleasantly surprised to discover its usefulness and productivity benefit. Very reliable as well. Strongly recommended.

I have hesitated for a long time before buying and installing Default Folder X (after all, Finder’s Open / Save sheets are doing a pretty decent job by now), but since I did, I cannot imagine going back to working without it. The integration of the Finder with its Open / Save sheets, Finder shortcuts, OpenMeta tagging right when you save a file… priceless. And since 4.3.6, Default Folder X finally uses Sparkle for updating, resolving my last quibble with the software. Pricey but worth every cent.

my mileage varies =;^>. in my workflow, this utility is not nearly as useful as in pre-OSX days when i treasured it so much i bought a license! when i began using OSX this utility was not immediately compatible and i gradually grew to live without it. but when i used it most recently in trial mode, i experienced daily crashes that only stopped when i quit running the utility.

it's the first tool, i'm installing on new macs! :-)

I have the last update and still it appears in the list of update

I seriously cannot imagine using my Mac without this, it's become that essential. The addition of the preview pane (to make up for Apple's lackluster preview) is a godsend, and the ability to add spotlight comments in the save dialog rocks. Oh yeah, and you can trash things right from the open or save dialog.

This app will change the way (and the speed) you work. Right next to Quicksilver this must be the most valuable addon to Mac OSX. Forget browsing your hard disk every time you open or save a file, Default Folder X does all the thinking for you! And clicking through all your windows to find open finder windows? Shear brilliance!
