It seems to be incompatible with 10.6 :( Is there a serviceable substitute?

It's not freeware, it's GPL (even better).

Certainly the best free packet sniffer I've found for OSX so far. It could stand to use some interface changes and UDP support would be nice, but it does what it advertizes and does it well.
