Flashblock

Version: || Release Date: 2006-12-06 || License: Freeware

Flashblock is an extension for the Mozilla, Firefox, and Netscape browsers that takes a pessimistic approach to dealing with Macromedia Flash content on a webpage and blocks ALL Flash content from loading. It then leaves placeholders on the webpage that allow you to click to download and then view the Flash content.

any gecko/mozilla-based browser can perfectly immitate the flashblock extension with a small amount of css that links to a small amount of xml. you can get instructions from floppymoose.com on how to do this. this method is equally effective and consumes less memory and cpu power than a prefpane or an extension would.

Since the time that I made my previous comment, I've learned that Camino 1.1 will have Flashblock built in. Awesome!

if you use myspace, this is a necessity.

A Camino version of this exists as part of CamiTools. I wouldn't browse without it.

I always install this on Firefox. Love it.
And I wouldn't say the approach is pessimistic so much as Flash itself deserves a pessimistic attitude. 99% of the time it's just crap you don't want to see anyway.

One of the biggest reasons I like this plugin:
No more noisy flash banners.
Ever.

Hallelujah.
