Folx is a simple yet powerful download manager and torrent client for Mac OS X.

Folx is a free application that combines two functionalities - of download manager and torrent client for Mac. Folx makes downloading extremely easy: just open the page with the file to be downloaded, click the link in your browser and Folx will start the download for you. Its auto resume option comes handy when the downloading gets interrupted. You can also assign a tag or a few to the downloaded content for accurate and easy search through the downloaded files. Folx is also available as PRO version. It brings such handy features as splitting the downloads in up to 10 threads which speeds up the download process; scheduling the download tasks according to your convenience; smart speed adjustment option (download speed will be adjusted automatically whenever you need to use Internet traffic to run other applications), iTunes integration, searching the web for torrents directly from Folx and password manager.

Apart from those complaints, it's promising:
• nice, lean GUI
• wonderful progress icon
• downloaded files can be tagged (used in spotlight!) and
• put into tag-named folders (attention: if you want to delete the file, delete all instances or instead right-click in Folx, choose «delete all files» — symbolic links, I suppose…)

Remember, it's beta — please report errors so they can fix it.

• Browser integration:
» downloads file in new window that should rather just open in browser
» no JavaScript links yet possible
I deactivated it, instead right-click and choose «download with Folx».
• Broken downloads (rarely) may break forever (!) and will not resume at all (made a bug report).
• Obtrusive queue entering: always opens a dialog, even though there are standard settings.

Seems like a very good download manager. Doesn't work so well where authentication and redirects are concerned (see Narutofan which uses both) but it's only beta.

I hope if this is made shareware it has a family pack or per-user license rather than per machine (cough cough iGetter) which gets expensive for geeky multi-machine-owners!

Folx is a lifesaver. Fixes/replaces Safari's inadequate download manager nicely. Interface could use a redesign, though. Right now there's too much stuff going on. Just a minor quibble on my part.

Can't make it as downloader for Safari at all. No option found.

I had the same issues you did and the links Kedikot recommended helped. I think these guys should work on a simple uninstall feature that saves everyone annoying times spent throlling the library looking for links to delete.

I can't even get this app to open on my new imac.....
Most definitely in a beta.
I have sent an email about this issue to tech. I will follow up after I get a response.

It's really free while it is beta, we might have plans to release an advanced version of Folx which will be distributed as shareware, but we don't know for sure now.

@yula : Odd, I can't find it either, now. But the whole page looks different. I think it was changed between my comment and yours, because I'm pretty sure I wasn't hallucinating it.

@ketidot : Thanks for the measured and helpful response to my frustrated ranting. Hopefully it does help you improve the software, which looks nice despite my complaints. I would like to try it again, but I am curious: Is it going to stay free? It's difficult to tell from Folx's web page.

2valrus: Please, note that Folx is a free beta version now. Beta means that we admit some issues may arise and will be always glad to help and resolve any issue you encounter.

Anyway we appreciate your comments and we are going to add the feature to set Folx not to capture browser's downloads automatically.

We are going to consider the possibility to simplify the uninstall process.

If you are currently experiencing some issues while uninstalling Folx, follow the instructions below:

Actually, when you simply move Folx application to trash without using the proper uninstaller your browser still thinks that Folx plugin is in place and will try to use it.
If you no longer have Folx in your system, please, delete the following components manually as well:
Library/Internet Plug-Ins/FolxNetscapePlugIn.plugin
~User/Library/Application Support/Eltima Software/Folx
~User/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/FolxNetscapePlugIn.plugin
