Too complicated to get working...have to install X11, then found the error I got was because I was running 10.5.2 and in order to fix the problem, I would have to re-download the 10.5.2 combo update and run it again. After all that research on the internet to find why Gimp wasn't working, I gave up. I'll stick with GraphicConverter.
Time to update to the new version and icon. Maybe point to a more relevant developer page too ( http://www.gimp.org or http://wilber-loves-apple.org ).
I love the GIMP. It's always felt hacked together, but in a fun way (Script-Fu!) All the hipsters are cruising around in stolen Photoshop CS2 Ferraris, while I chill out in my '95 GIMP Volvo. Free of charge, free of guilt. Give it a try.
I don't agree that .app should be removed from the application name. Aside from its dependence on X11, it is a standalone application. As such, it should be distinguished from "The Gimp" packages that are available in MacPorts or Fink. Those versions are direct ports, and require the installation of additional libraries such as GTK. Oh, and the sourceforge project that is linked above is called "Gimp.app"
I think gimp.app is distinct from regular ol' GIMP in that it is specifically compiled an optimized for OS X. Hence the .app in the title is more than appropriate.
If you are the developer of an app, you can take it over by using the claim
function on the right hand side of the app view. This requires you to be
logged in.

Gimp.app is now at version 2.4.5r2 and it has been compiled as a native build (so X11 is not required!)
it's experimental, but I have not had any problems with it
Best app ever!!

Some useful information:
A universal binary is available.
X11 is required.
Any application ported to Mac OS gets the .app, it's pointless
Gimp rocks
