Hi chrisj,
yours is a common wish and I would love to implement it as soon as possible. However, I can not do so because WebKit based styles such as this can not control even the location of the close box (it is always in the top left corner. There is good news though, the Growl team want the same as you so they have a ticket and plan to release a fix for Growl 1.2 (http://trac.growl.info/ticket/677), an update to GrowlHUD should follow shortly thereafter.

If instead of the default closing button on mouse over the designed one could be used, that would be perfect.
