I found that google notifier and gmail use less ram and have faster search than mail and growl mail. I would like it if google notifier adopted growl instead of its own notifier window though. Although before I switched to google apps for my domain I did use this and liked it.

There's a fix for Leopard - you can turn on backwards compatability in Mail.app -
from a terminal window, do these two commands:
defaults write com.apple.mail EnableBundles -bool YES
defaults write com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion -int 3

Doesn't work with Leopard unfortunately right now. I miss this software already!
