Hazel
Hazel is your personal housekeeper, organizing and cleaning folders based on rules you define. Hazel can also manage your trash.
Organize your files using a familiar rule interface. Filter on the file's name, type, date, the site or email address it came from and more. And do more than just file. You can set color labels, Spotlight keywords and comments and even archive files. In addition, Hazel can manage your Trash for you, relieving you of having to empty it yourself.
All this is done automatically in the background allowing you to focus on your real work.

Wish I'd had this from the beginning. Four stars!
Couple this with dropbox and you are onto a winner.
changed my mac and my life. I have hazel do menial tasks, but can be a formidable organiser when needed. More useful than automator in many respects
Log Monitor is a similar program for Windows.
The homepage is unavailable, but it can still be downloaded, eg: from here.
Hazel keeps my Download folder clean and has eliminated the need for AppZapper. Must-have program.
My desktop is cleaner and my documents are better organized. Thanks, Hazel.
The update is really nice. Lots of new possibilities with rules. Also, now it gives you the option of removing an application's associated files (preferences and support folder) when you drag the application to the trash.
Hazel quietly sits there, moving movie files from my downloads directory to one place, my music files to another, then it runs scripts to rename the files and finally it changes the label colour or imports the file into iTunes and sends me a notification via growl.
I spent around ten minutes setting up rules and, so far, it's saved me hours. As with all my favourite programs, the biggest compliment I can give is that I forget it's there. Hazel quietly sits there, making my life easier.
Hazel is like my little file elf running around inside my computer keeping my files filed and my desktop clean. Now I can focus on what I need to do, rather than worrying about keeping myself organised!
