JustLooking
Version: 3.2 ||
Release Date: 2008-06-05 ||
License: Freeware
Developer: Marc Wandschneide
Replacement for Preview.
JustLooking is designed to be used instead of the Preview application on your computer for browsing most image file formats. In particular, it has the following differences:
- It focuses on files and directories instead of lists of files. Thus, once you load a file, you can easily navigate through all other files in the same directory.
- It displays images at their native resolution instead of interpreting DPI information stored in the image meta-data. While images are printed at the maximum resolution possible, on screen they are displayed pixel-by-pixel.
- Being designed more for viewing of Images, it properly shows animated GIF files.
- The entire program can easily be manipulated and powered by simple keystrokes for a quick and pleasant viewing experience.
- There is support for printing, image resizing, saving to a few key image formats, and displaying of all image info.

After changing from windows i've been looking for a replacement for Googles Picasa for about one year. Without being perfect, THIS program comes closest (without organising the pics itself) from freeware side. I love it and made it the viewer for all pics format! Thx a lot.
I use Just Looking to watch photos directly in full screen mode, which is nice. However, it always opens in windowed mode first, then switches to full screen.
It would be better if it started in full screen mode without any flicker... :)
The two items that I compained about in a previous post have been solved in this new version (3.0) of JustLooking:
1. You may choose the size of the toolbar buttons in the preferences.
2. And now animated GIFs are displayed at correct speed.
It has a nice and intuitive interface. I specially like the possiblity to browse pictures with just the left and right arrow keys.
It's very fast when opening large files and the full screen mode is great.
JustLooking has just replaced Xee as my main picture viewer. (But that's, of course, a matter of personal taste.)
Great job, dear developer!
I agree with el_cravito's comments about the toolbar icons. Still, I've found this to be even faster than Xee with huge graphics files on my G3 iBook.
Nice application indeed!
But... I have two little complaints about it:
1. The toolbar and the buttons could be smaller, to leave more free space for the pictures themselves.
2. Animated GIFs are displayed faster than they are in browsers. I tried those same animeted GIFs with Xee and they are displayed at the correct speed. JustLooking displays them always faster.
Maybe the developer could try to correct this second item in a next version of JustLooking. And please consider the possibility or reducing the size of the toolbar and buttons.
Otherwise, this application is excellent!
Preview has a very annoying way of dealing with multiple files (it ignores other images that may be in a directory unless you manually load them all). It is also annoying because it opens pdfs in a "fit view" where the text is virtually unreadable on a little macbook screen (I use PDFView to solve that problem).
Is it the porting to Mac OS X of Win XP's Image & Fax viewer?? :)
That is a good question. It looks pretty much like the standard windows picture-preview browser. I'll try this app later.
Partial answer: fading effects and nice slideshow capabilities.
What's wrong with Preview? It opens many formats, it is fast, you can crop, save in different types. It is near perfect for this type of app. Why would I need a "replacement"?
