MacFusion

Version: 2.0.4 || Release Date: 2010-12-03 || License: Other Open Source Developer: Michael Gorbach | App Owner: mgorbach

Mount SSH/SFTP or FTP accounts as if they were local files.

MacFusion is an open source Mac application that allows you to work with files on servers across the internet, as if they were sitting on your computer. Macfusion presents a Volume in Finder, letting you use your favorite Mac applications to work with them. Macfusion works with SSH/SFTP and FTP servers.

More generally, Macfusion is a front-end to Gogole's MacFUSE software. Macfusion provides a plugin API to enable the creation of plugins for other FUSE filesystems.

Mounting an FTP server with MacFusion & OSXFUSE is so slow it's useless, and MacFusion tends to crash. Cyberduck is a much better solution.

Lets you mount remote filesystems over SSH or FTP, and access them through Finder. Far nicer than using the ssh command in Terminal, or a third-party FTP client (which you may well have to pay for).

NB. Finder does already provide FTP access (via “Connect to server…”), but it’s read-only.

NB2: In order to have write access over SSH, you’ll need to do the trick described here (http://jann.is/daily/archives/757-ExtraAdvanced-options-for-MacFuseMacFusion.html) to map your local username to the username of your SSH account.

NB3: I find it convenient to place a link to Macfusion.app in Finder’s toolbar.

To get it to work under Snow Leopard, increase time-out interval and refer to this post:

Is this still being maintained? MacFuse is currently 1.5.1 and the latest MacFusion is for use with MacFuse core 1.1 . . .

V. 1.2 Beta 3 hangs my system when I try to mount an ftp location. I then have to restart Mac OS by keeping the reset button down.
It did this twice on two different locations, accessed via the 'favorites' menu.
I don't have the time to investigate more, sorry. :)

Just a note to everyone ...
If you have problems with write access using FTP or SSH, please try adding
"-odefer_auth" in the advanced options, without the quotes. This has fixed many issues with FTP and SSH.

If anyone has any improvement suggestions, bug reports or any other issues please add them to the list of issues at the MacFusion Project
http://code.google.com/p/macfusion/

http://code.google.com/p/macfusion/wiki/quick is a good place to start.

New version is here: http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/users/08/mgorbach/MacFusionWeb/MacFusion_1_01_Beta1.zip

Just a note for you all: If you were having issues with storing of passwords in keychain under SSH or FTP accounts, I highly recommend you give the new beta a try. It has fixed many issues related to storing passwords. It can be found at the google group for MacFusion, linked off the MacFusion website.

Pretty much K.I.S.S. I love it's simplicity and although I'm still working with Fetch and Transmit, I heart this one very much.
