Opinions:
This thing is pretty much garbage on Leopard. After installing it I just get a spinning beachball of death whenever I open up Apple Mail.
@ bitnix:
I suppose Mail Unread Menu works only when Mail.app is open.
If you want to check your POP account without opening Mail.app, you may try MailWidget:
http://osx.iusethis.com/app/mailwidget
It checks your POP account everytime you activate the Dashboard or periodically (every 5 minutes or every 10 minutes, for example).
Would be cool if it polled for unread mail without actually having to open Mail.app.
At least that's how it worked last time I checked, some years ago. It's the same nowadays too, right?
Folks, this app is for people who have the dock hidden and don't want to show the dock every time they simply want to know how many new messages they have.

That crazy clock (as you wrote) is from a little application called MenuPics, that changes the look of the menu items.
You may find it here:

It's not Universal Binary. It's PowerPC only. And I didn't try it yet in my Intel-based iMac. So, I can't tell you if it works here."
actually it's not. MenuPics changes the MenuBar icons. The clock is actually FuzzyClock, which can be found here: http://osx.iusethis.com/app/fuzzyclock
Well, it appears I've run into a problem. Mail Unread Menu won't give me a mail-count. It was working fine until a couple of days after I started using it. Now, it just sits in the menubar and won't give me any sort of mail-count. I get this in Console.app when I open up Mail.app while Mail Unread Menu is on.
Very handy little app. :)
You may also try a Dashboard widget called Clockish. It displays the time almost the same way.
Something like "Almost five" or "Nine fifteenish" or "A quarter to seven"...

Sorry, off topic... What is that crazy clock in the menu (in the screenshot)?
