Mail Unread Menu is a simple menu bar application which can provide you with a quick and easy way to see how many unread email messages are in apple's mail.app. unlike other menu bar notification applications, mail unread menu is actually a plugin for mail.app, which means that the count is instantaneously updated whenever you recieve new email or change the status of a message.

Very handy little app. :)

You may also try a Dashboard widget called Clockish. It displays the time almost the same way.
Something like "Almost five" or "Nine fifteenish" or "A quarter to seven"...

BRH:
That crazy clock (as you wrote) is from a little application called MenuPics, that changes the look of the menu items.
You may find it here:

It's not Universal Binary. It's PowerPC only. And I didn't try it yet in my Intel-based iMac. So, I can't tell you if it works here.

Sorry, off topic... What is that crazy clock in the menu (in the screenshot)?

It's a good utility, but what I really need is something that could check the POP account without opening Mail.app.
There used to be a menubar item, called MailTicker, that did just that. But it seems to me that it doesn't work under the latest versions of Mac OS X. (And I suppose that its developement has been abandoned.)

Thought I'd add a positive comment :-)

When using my laptop, I always auto-hide my dock, so having a count in the menubar is perfect. Thanks.

I try to avoid using or even seeing the dock. I see the number of messages when I switch apps, but I prefer to have something in the menu bar. Thanks!

Right-click dock icon > Get New Mail
Red thing shows how many unread you have anyway.
Mail Unread Menu sucks.

Isn't that superfluos? I always check my mail-count in the dock?!

That's cool, but I don't think that I will be using it since I have my dock always showing so my count is always there.
