It doesn't let me slow down a movie, only make it faster (with [ and ] ).
I have the same problem with the gui version, though.

I singlehandedly find this to be the greatest media application of all time. It's so efficient I could play 320×240 videos at MPEG-4, off of a Pentium 166MMX (running Linux). I've used it since 2000, on Linux, Windows and OS X, and it remains the most efficient and versatile tool I have found. The way to get the most out of this is to compile it from source, preferably the latest SVN code. The only downside is that code compilation can sometimes fail, and there aren't too many people on the mailing list who know much about OS X development, but at least some support exists, and Mohammad Haque (Hawk of AppleGeeks) actively participates, even offering SVN-compiled OS X builds on request. It's well worth the effort.

this is surprisingly powerful for a command line app. liked it better than the gui version.
