Notational Velocity is an application that stores and retrieves notes.
In Notational Velocity, the same area is used both for creating notes and searching. I.e., in the process of entering the title for a new note, related notes appear below, letting users file information there if they choose. Likewise, if a search reveals nothing, one need simply press return to create a note with the appropriate title.
Its unique advantages are as follows:- Modeless Operation
Searching for notes is not a separate action; rather, it is the primary interface. - Incremental Search
Searching encompasses all notes' content and occurs instantly with each key pressed. - Transparent Encryption
All information is compressed and encrypted (enabled optionally) before it is recorded to disk. - Mouseless Interaction
Notational Velocity's window was designed for keyboard input above all else, and thus has no buttons. - Data Instead of Documents
There is no manual "saving" in Notational Velocity; all modifications take effect immediately. - Complete External Access
Synchronize natively with Simplenote, or via files in Dropbox with PlainText, Elements, iA Writer, and other iOS apps.
Required OS: not specified

Such a beauty, this program.
What the hell!? I thought this app was long dead, I think I nearly fainted when I saw this update postedâ¦
Well anyhow, now that it seems to have legs again (was it always open source?), it's definitely worth a download⦠If you need a little application to store notes, any day-to-day material, it's really one of the simplest, but best at doing just that.
Looks very cool - you can set it to use flat files (txt, rtf, rtfd) in a location of your choice so synchronization from one machine to another shouldn't be a problem.
Yes! An official beta is finally out!
By far my favorite note taking app. Fast and the integration of creation and search in this way is so elegant. Been using the beta universal binary but even in its PPC only form it is wonderful.
This app definitely has a cult following⦠and for good reason. I feel like I've lost part of my brain when I don't have access to it.
Thanks! I guess Zachary's going to expect a flood of emails asking him for the UB beta...
@rampancy : I emailed the developer and asked about a Universal Binary and he asked if I wanted to beta test the upcoming release. You should send him an email.
Where can I get the latest beta for Notational Velocity?
Great application. Judging from the current beta the next release will be just as great or better than the current stable. Glad I found this one.
