nvALT

Version: 2.1 || Release Date: 2011-07-29 || License: BSD License Developer: Brett Terpstra | App Owner: ttscoff

nvALT is a fork of the original Notational Velocity with some additional features and some interface modifications. It is a work in progress.

Notational Velocity is a way to take notes quickly and effortlessly using just your keyboard. You press a shortcut to bring up the window and just start typing. It will begin searching existing notes, filtering them as you type. You can use ⌘-J and ⌘-K to move through the list. Enter selects and begins editing. If you’re creating a new note, you just type a unique title and press enter to move the cursor into a blank edit area. Check out the descriptions at notational.net for a more eloquent synopsis.

nvALT adds widescreen layout support, collapsible notes list, customizable colors, MultiMarkdown/Markdown/Textile preview rendering with source code tab and more.

If version 2.1 doesn't launch on 10.5: copy 'libcrypto.0.9.8.dylib' to '/usr/lib'. You'll find it Dropbox.app or Plex.app.

This is the best Markdown editor I have found so far.

This app is perhaps my dream note-taking app. I have to take notes on a lot of scientific equations generally involving lots of exponents and subscripts, so being able to take notes in Textile or Markdown and be able to convert them automatically to HTML for export is a dream. (In, say, Word or TextEdit, I end up fiddling around with the formatting panels for so long that I lose track of the lecture.)

Also, it looks nice, which is a lovely bonus.

@ ttscoff:
I agree that it's subjective. But I really enjoy the option to change the color of the notes background.
I used a coler picker and selected the background color in Reeder (the Google Reader client) and I'm using it as the backgrond of the notes. And it's so much easier on the eyes.
But that's just my personal taste...

@tee_cee that's subjective :). ET's version is sweet, though, and was the inspiration for several of the features in nvALT. He's also been great about sharing code for customizing backgrounds.

nvALT's major difference is that it has MultiMarkdown preview with direct HTML source view, as well as online sharing of notes.

Plus, it has that sweet OS X-style bottom bar on the main window :).

There is also this other fork of Notational Velocity (by Elastic Threads), with a slightly nicer interface:

A great little upgrade about the original NV.

New version with customizable notes list colors!

Looks simple and nice, somewhat similar to macjournal.
