Palantir tries to guess the kind of file you drag and drop on it. Since it doesn't use the name or the HFS attributes of the files to do its job, it is particularly useful to guess the type of a file which have not been correctly named or typed. Palantir is in fact a graphical user interface to the 'file' command line utility.
