Pixen

Version: 3.5.10b1 || Release Date: 2013-01-16 || License: Freeware App Owner: matt

Pixen is an innovative graphics editor for the Mac. It's designed from top to bottom for pixel artists—people who make low-resolution raster art like the sprites you see in old video games. But it's great for artists of all arenas: Pixen is like a very powerful MSPaint or a simpler, more agile Photoshop.

Just a heads up for those who haven't used the app recently. The developer recently updated this and is available in the Mac App Store.

Unfortunately this app hasn't been in development for a while.

If you are interested in pixel art check out GrafX2.

A bit unstable, but the better pixel art application on a mac.

Eh. Neither Acorn nor Pixelmator are targeted towards pixel art. In fact, Pixelmator makes it rather difficult as there are a few rounding errors in its pencil drawing tool and it has no support for nearest neighbor scaling. Argh.

I was able to edit an animated gif that I've wanted done for months now but couldn't until now that I found Pixen. It did the job, that's all I need. Thank you Pixen!

Instead of this, look for Acorn or Pixelmator. There's your answer to pixelart'ing.

It's quite broken on OS 10.5 (there hasn't been any activity on the developer's site since 2006), but they have an unstable version that works better for me - 3.1b in http://opensword.org/Unstable/

(Also, I tried to post the same comment a few days ago, it went through but it seems to have been deleted since, weird)

Its like Paint for Mac, only better!
But it Crashes quite often for me.

This is one of those programs, that reaches so far... but not yet far enough. It kind of stumbles just before the goal line.

Why? Because of its instability. I hate to say it, but it's true.

It crashes all the time, here and there. It might work ok'ish with small pictures and very few layers, but once you start adding layers, it goes down to a crawl (at best), or it simply just crashes without warning.

I'd like to humbly ask the good developer (Andy and his friends):

Please make this just a tad bit more stable and a little bit faster... You've nailed everything in terms of functionality (nothing is left to desire), but again, stability...

I would more than happily shell out a hefty bunch of dollars for this. It's that good.

In the meantime, I've been looking for a decent alternative for creating pixel art. But I still haven't found anything satisfying. (Suggestions are very welcome.)

I really like this app after just using it once, though a few minor things bug me (all except one relating to the interface, though I'm a GUI-nut). First and foremost, it doesn't seem to like actually drawing, and didn't update the screen half the time while I was dragging the pencil across my image.
