type special characters without knowing the keyboard combos
PopChar is a utility application that lets you insert special characters, accented letters, umlauts, etc. into your documents. No need to search for and remember keystrokes. Just pop up the PopChar window, click the desired character, and the character appears in your current document. Unicode fonts are neatly arranged in the standard Unicode categories.

Actually, this little App ist just so much more useful than Apples overcomplicated Character Palette. Mind you, the price ist just way too high. I hope, this is going to be fixed, when the Mac App Store arrives.
why the priceeee??
I agree with matt. Also if you don't want to go via the menu's, you can use the standalone KeyViewer app instead. That is also free and does the same thing.
Why is this so expensive? I'm not trying to be a troll, I'm genuinely asking. Is there some additional functionality that I'm not seeing?
I just use the "Character Palette" from System Preferences/International/Input Menu
