PopChar X
PopChar is a utility application that lets you insert special characters, accented and foreign letters, etc., from all installed fonts into your documents. You never need to search for and remember keystrokes any longer. Just pop up the PopChar window, click the desired character, and the character appears in your current document.
If a font contains Unicode characters, you can see all of them, neatly arranged in the standard Unicode categories.

why the priceeee??
I agree with matt. Also if you don't want to go via the menu's, you can use the standalone KeyViewer app instead. That is also free and does the same thing.
Why is this so expensive? I'm not trying to be a troll, I'm genuinely asking. Is there some additional functionality that I'm not seeing?
I just use the "Character Palette" from System Preferences/International/Input Menu
