Psi
Psi is the premiere Instant Messaging application designed for Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X and GNU/Linux. Built upon an open protocol named Jabber, Psi is a fast and lightweight messaging client that utilises the best in open source technologies.
The goal of the Psi project is to create a powerful, yet easy-to-use Jabber/XMPP client that tries to strictly adhere to the XMPP drafts and Jabber JEPs.

How do I use PSI to make my MSN/Yahoo contacts appear in iChat? I'd love to do that - then I'd only ever need iChat! Help would be much appreciated.

I use MSN in iChat with PSI. You just need PSI to set it up initially, after it's working you can wipe it out. I keep it saved just in case. The sad thing is that it only enables text, audio, video and file transfers don't work.
You can use this as a means to an end, the end being setting up your MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger contacts in your iChat Jabber list.
