RCDefaultApp Universal Binary

Version: 2.0.1 || Release Date: 2006-10-31 || License: Freeware

RCDefaultApp is a Mac OS X 10.2 or higher preference pane that allows a user to set the default application used for various URL schemes, file extensions, file types, MIME types, and Uniform Type Identifiers (or UTIs; MacOS 10.4 only). MacOS X uses the extension and file type settings to choose the application when opening a file in Finder, while Safari and other applications use the URL and MIME type settings at other times for content not related to a file (such as an unknown URL protocol, or a media stream).

this has helped me solve so many file association issues on my mac, thus avoiding the dreaded refreshing/resetting of launch services (which is a huge pain). kudos to the folks at rubicode :]

I agree with kadis. Although not terribly useful on a day to day basis, I can't imagine using a Mac without it...

This is one of those apps that should be built into the system. It's that nice.

I use this to set my default browser, feedreader and email program (Gmail Browser). It's extremely useful.

Fire and forget. I honestly don't remember what I have this set up to do, but it must be doing it well because I don't have to fool with it. :)

The ability to list extensions by application in version 2.0 is very welcomed. This is a must-have preference pane for anyone even half-serious about configuring their computers the way they want.

For the longest time whenever I clicked on a someone's AIM/iChat status web badge it would launch Adium (which I no longer use) instead of iChat. I used this app to change the default app for "aim" links to iChat. It's only tool I know of that will do this for you.
