Sigma Chess
Sigma Chess is a master strength Macintosh chess program for both OS X and Classic Mac OS.
Sigma Chess 6.1 Lite, which is freeware and can be downloaded here. Certain high-end features are either disabled or limited in this free version. Nevertheless, it's a complete, full strength chess program with many features; it's not just a demo. If you're a casual chess player without the need for special features, chances are that Sigma Chess 6.1 Lite will do just fine.
For only $20 you can upgrade Sigma Chess 6.1 Lite to Sigma Chess 6.1 Pro, which contains the full feature set.

THE nicest and most feature-packed chessprogram for OS X.
One feature is the UCI support that makes it possible to install a number of chess engines (which needs to be compiled for the OS X platform though), eg. the very good Hiarcs (commercial) and Glaurung (free) engines. Also the builtin engine should give all but the strongest a difficult game too. A chessplayer yourself ? then be sure to check this one out!
Still, Tuirgin does have a point: if you're really serious about chess you probadly need to resort to (cough) windows software, although supposedly ExaChess (http://www.exachess.com/), a chess db program for the Mac (€46), is a program with a feature-set that mirros that of Chessbase.
Unfortunately, it's no competitor for Fritz (playing/analysis) or ChessBase (db). Examples:
Variations are added as comments and aren't playableâ”you can't view them on the board.
The max size of the collections seems to be capped at 1,000,000, while today's large bases are >3x that size.
I like the developer, but ultimately I use Scid (weird UI) or resort to costly/buggy Windows apps.
