sixtyforce Universal Binary

Version: 0.9.2 || Release Date: 2007-12-21 || License: Shareware ($15) Developer: Gerrit Goossen

sixtyforce is an emulator that runs Nintendo 64 games. It does this by dynamically translating the code that a Nintendo 64 uses into something your Mac understands. Nearly every part of a Nintendo 64 has been painstakingly recreated entirely out of software to pull off such an amazing feat.

0.9.1 has brought some long-awaited compatibility improvements. Majora's Mask is now playable, although I got stuck in the Goron City part due to some graphical glitches (the lens of truth doesn't work.)

Gerrit has rewritten the save functionality, but this time around it is a members-only feature. I decided to register Sixtyforce just for this, and I found out that the extra goodies (freeze states, joypad support) make it worth the money. Playing through Ocarina of Time in fullscreen with a joypad is amazing (especially compared to a tiny window and keyboard in 0.8.0 unregistered.) It's almost as good as a real N64 and it looks sharper to boot.

I hope more people register Sixtyforce so Gerrit can spend more time improving it.

This is the best N64 emulator available for Mac OS X. I haven't had that much luck with certain point releases, I think I was running 0.8.0 or 0.8.5 for the saving capabilities. However, the emulation is constantly getting better.

Currently, it can't run advanced titles like Majora's Mask, but I got it to run Ocarina of Time beautifully.

Project64 on Windows is one of the few reasons I still have for keeping my PC around- to play the titles sixtyforce can't.

And I think that the author deserves to ask for some money to use certain features. I doubt that maintaining this program singlehandedly is much of a cake walk.

What are the parts that have not been "painstakingly recreated entirely out of software" created with then? Food for thought.

Quite effective, runs quickly, I like it. Made even better by a game controller (actually an XBox controller, but meh) attached for just this purpose ;)
