Spotify

Version: 0.9.12.10 || Release Date: 2014-08-27 || License: Freeware App Owner: salan

Spotify is a new way to enjoy music. Simply download and install, before you know it you’ll be singing along to the genre, artist or song of your choice. With Spotify you are never far away from the song you want.

There are no restrictions in terms of what you can listen to or when. Forget about the hassle of waiting for files to download and fill up your hard drive before you get round to organising them. Spotify is instant, fun and simple.

Because music is social, Spotify allows you to share songs and playlists with friends, and even work together on collaborative playlists, Friday afternoon in the office might never be the same again! We’re music lovers like everyone else.

We want to connect millions of people with their favorite songs by creating a product that people love to use. We respect creativity and believe in fairly compensating artists for their work. We’ve cleared the rights to use the music you’ll listen to in Spotify.

A good concept, revolutionary way of selling music on the internet. The app is good and stable, for any music fan it needs more ways of organization than just playlists.

IMO it will never replace a local library of music you own, remember you dont buy the music even with a Premium, you just rent it, so its up to them to keep the music you like or delete it.

As for the free version, I would like to think of it as a online radio that unlike last.fm and the like, the user can customize the program as much as he wants, instead of a stream based on "genres" or "similar artists".

Unfortunately the number and frequency of audio ads seem to be increasing lately, or maybe its just me...
Also ads makes listening to classical, operas and live concerts albums unbearable...

Samj, Spotify gives you 5.7 millions songs, on a CD there are 15-20 songs... How are you doing your math?

You're right about the two other points though, with Spotify you don't own music (although there maybe some "backup" tools), and from what I read the revenue earned by the artists seems low. I hope they find a way to pay the artists correctly, because I really love Spotify. :)
(I got the premium subscription, mainly to have offline mode.)

Technically impressive, but expensive (rather buy a CD or two every month), dangerous (if you stop paying you lose your music - can't do that with songs you own) and apparently not great for the artists either. Will keep a close eye on how this industry develops but sceptical for the time being.

For those using last.fm, you can get an html page + an rss feed matching new Spotify releases with last.fm's recommendations for you.

You can also see new albums added to Spotify that match the top 50 artists (or so) from your last.fm profile here

For those who missed it: as of February 10, 2009 Spotify is available to anyone in the UK without the need for an invitation. (Spotify blog)

Also check getsatisfaction.com for feedback, feature wishes, bugs, etc.

Note: you can backup your playlists manually by copying/pasting the songs into Textedit, then saving as an html file that can be imported by Firefox 3's bookmark manager, and from there pasted back to Spotify (individually or all together).

You can also organize your albums in Firefox, see this blog.

Truly amazing, search then select a track and it almost instantly plays. Familiar, clean and simple interface. Personally I prefer it to using iTunes, mainly because my iTunes library is such a mess, but still whose isn't?

Since 18/12, Spotify scrobbles to last.fm.
Also, there's a nice script that adds little icons to tracks on last.fm, to automatically search for them in Spotify:

It is not a shareware, it is free ! you just have to receive an invitation.

That's two days now that I am using it for free and non stop, it is fantastic, I have heard a 20 seconds promotion message every 2 or 3 hours, telling me that I should go and listen to a band's latest album, I can live with that !.

I love it !

PS : I have another invitation and would like to trade it with a FFFFOUND! invitation.
