Free demo is great - it was able to read a USB external HD which Disk Utility had been unable to repair, and let me review its contents (including audio and video preview). In the end I decided that I didn't need it -- all but a few of the files I had lost were backed up, and it wasn't worth $99 for the ones that weren't.

One annoyance - the columns of files weren't sortable by creation or modification date, though these were displayed - this made it harder to figure out what had been saved since my last back up.
