Update- get expander here: http://my.smithmicro.com/downloads/trials/expander_mac.html
all this is useful for is .sit which i havent seen in ages. BetterZip is by far a much greater program for handling compressed files.
Another way to avoid annoyances: Don't use the installer. Ctrl-click, choose "Show Package Contents", navigate to Contents/Resources/Payload/Stuffit. The Expander.app is in here, just drag it to your Applications folder.
Stuffit bashers just need to give it a rest already. Expander even in 2009 is still the gold standard of compression programs: it's the only program that handles every single file format, quickly and easily.
To avoid the "you must sign up to our email list" crap, just use this link: http://my.smithmicro.com/downloads/trials/downloads.html. Select Expander2009 on the left and hit download.
It's my alternative to .zip in Mac
Why do so many people insist they need Stuffit? What's wrong with zip? It's free and built-in to the OS. I rarely even see anything in .sit format anymore. The sooner Stuffit dies a tragic death the better.
The new fancy installer that requires admin-password can be bypassed by right-clicking the "StuffIt Expander 2009 Installer.app", choosing "Show Package Contents" and navigating to Contents/Resources/Payload/Stuffit where the application is located - ready for being dragged to the Applications folder.

I honestly don't know why so many people are on the bash Stuffit Expander bandwagon. 33 MB is not a big for an app in the days of 400 GB hard drives. SE has always been fast, accurate, and stable- unlike pretenders that frequently crap out if the file happens to be too difficult for them. Plus version 13 that just came out now finally opens 7-zip files.
The only annoying thing is how hard they make it to find the free download (I just use AppFresh, it downloads the latest version wherever it is.)
Admittedly version 13 botched up the app preferences, but I've never really used preferences for this app anyway.
Nearly a decade ago, this application stood as the heavyweight in Mac compression utilities. Unfortunately, Stuffit Expander (and all related versions) has totally fallen apart over the years. It seems as though each new version becomes riddled with more bugs, bloat, and deviousness than the update before it. I've made it a point over the years to stop supporting developers who only release their applications or files using this compression method. I highly recommend anyone use any other compression type out there.
