Simple to-do list.

TaskPaper is a simple to-do list that's surprisingly adept. Unlike the competition, TaskPaper's text based interface offers you paper-like simplicity and ease of use.

@deef I really love the syncing feature as well. One tip is that you can hardlink files from the simpletext folder to whereever you like to keep them.

One more thing...with some trepidation I tried having the same file open on two different macs & making changes on both...sync seems to work flawlessly.

This has just replaced a word processor-based system for recording ethnographic fieldnotes that I've used since 1998. Subtly but immensely powerful.

I like it thus far, but it is definitely not perfect.

1. I like the idea of auto-formatting as you type - but I'd much rather see a full Markdown implementation than the current one. Markdown is easy enough to use and also has the benefit of supporting a lot more things (image embedding, real links, etc.).

2. The iPhone app should support the same skins and better mirror the interface of the Mac app. It is annoying to have the behavior be different between the two.

3. Syncing through yet another solution (simpletext.ws) is also just annoying. I run the app, but ideally I'd like it if it synced with Dropbox, Simplenote or MobileMe or all of the above. Seriously why reinvent the wheel every time and force users to run yet another daemon, especially for what amounts to a very limited subset of apps?

Other than that, the interface simplicity is nice and it has definitely replaced the moribund Hit List for my task lists.

switched last week after several years of using 37 Signals Backpack web app & couldn't be happier

I got through all GTD apps you can imagine and more (this is my obsession, not a very productive one, I must admit), and at last I can say that TaskPaper is the best and the easiest to use. Strongly recommend to watch a screencast on the app's page - it is really helpful to appreciate its idea and simplicity.

I use this every day and use Drop Box to sync and version my main notes file across 2 computers. It's awesome.

@patlaj - Keep an eye out for the next version... maybe next month or two... development versions can be downloaded from my forums now. Among other things it will give you a number of ways to show all projects in a single list.

Am I missing something? I tried to use this for a few days, but dropped it. Should you be able to get a list of all projects without tasks? I really want that.

I do certainly like the idea. And I especially like that the files it creates can be edited in any text editor. But... I guess it's just not quite enough.

This is a great little program. I'm a big fan. It's nice and simple so you don't waste too much time getting it set up how you like.
