I wouldn't say its a waste, the interface is very slick and you can even combine searches like 食/た for specific combinations etc. Startup time is slow however and I question whether the interface is worth the $30 if it's using free dictionaries.
Don't waste your time with this one. Get JEDict. JEDict does more and costs less.
