The Unarchiver Universal Binary

Version: 1.6.1 || Release Date: 2008-01-19 || License: Other Open Source

The Unarchiver is a much more capable replacement for "BOMArchiveHelper.app", the built-in archive unpacker program in Mac OS X. The Unarchiver is designed to handle many more formats than BOMArchiveHelper, and to better fit in with the design of the Finder. It can also handle filenames in foreign character sets, created with non-English versions of other operating systems.

May work for simple zip files, but has lots of problems with tar files containing symlinks et al. For instance, try downloading the source code from UNIX Network Programming and run ./configure which will fail utterly with an "error: can not find sources in ...". Unpacking the file with "tar cfvz" works fine (ok, it still fails, but in this case because the 1995-style script doesn't recognize OS X).

not perfect but still the most versatile, fast unpacking app for os x. nice icons too.

as mentioned below it doesn't handle password protected rars properly, for that use unrarx (with the annoyance of having to enter the pw before unpacking).

the problem with stuffit, to reiterate, is that it's too memory intensive/slow and doesen't do rars, use unarchiver instead.

Not 100% perfect. For some reason, it doesn't handle all files that should be supported. Certain password-protected rar files, for example, fail to extract, even when the right password is entered. Really don't know why this happens, so w/in Path Finder I decompress those that don't work with Unarchiver without problem. Any ideas?

I agree. This program should handle parity files. Still, very handy, thank you.

This is utterly fantastic. It opens literally every archive format you can think of, including ZIP, SIT, RAR, TAR, GZ and many, many, many obscure formats.

Several GREAT features:

- when it dearchives, you can set it to delete the original archive, and then open the window with the unarchived files in the finder. Bingo, when you download an archive in Firefox/Safari, you can get at the contents of the archive immediately rather than having to navigate to your download folder, etc.

- it has special handling for widgets -- it opens them automatically just like Safari does. So now, you can easily install widgets while using Firefox.

- it's a complete replacement for Stuffit Expander and Apple's BOMArchiveHelper (who on earth thought up that name?).

Some small caveats: it doesn't handle Stuffit's newer SITX format -- but that is rarely found around the place anyway.

Also, it doesn't hand PAR files which would be a handy addition to truly qualify it as the "ultimate" dearchiver, but it's asking a bit much -- PAR is not an archive -- it is parity files used to check or rebuild missing archive parts.

Musthave for every OS X user that doesn't want to blood his Mac with the horrible malware of Stuffit

blackjack75: That is actually tentatively planned for v2.0, if I can ever find some time to work on it.

blackjack75: Wow, that's a truly awesome idea! If only I had some spare time... :)
