The Unarchiver
Version: 1.6.1 ||

The Unarchiver is a much more capable replacement for "BOMArchiveHelper.app", the built-in archive unpacker program in Mac OS X. The Unarchiver is designed to handle many more formats than BOMArchiveHelper, and to better fit in with the design of the Finder. It can also handle filenames in foreign character sets, created with non-English versions of other operating systems.

The Unarchiver has its idiosyncrasies. It's snappy and light, however it doesn't support some of the formats it suggests. Rather strange is the fact that it seems to support unarchiving .exe files, which is obviously a tad useless (when it tried to expand one it gave errors). Also, .bin, .sit, and .sitx are unsupported although appear to be feasible. Nevertheless, it is useful for everyday usage.
word is password protected rars will be worknig with 2.0 which should be out at the beginning of this year (read: soon)
So apparently this thing has a problem with extracting .tbz files...
Wow! I've never seen a decompression app work this quickly and with such a simple interface. Dump Stuffit. I didn't realize what everyone meant by "bloated" until I tried Unarchiver.
May work for simple zip files, but has lots of problems with tar files containing symlinks et al. For instance, try downloading the source code from UNIX Network Programming and run <code>./configure</code> which will fail utterly with an "error: can not find sources in ...". Unpacking the file with "tar cfvz" works fine (ok, it still fails, but in this case because the 1995-style script doesn't recognize OS X).
nevermind.. password protected zip files. i got too excited for my own good. back to unrarx..
handles password-protected rars finally!
not perfect but still the most versatile, fast unpacking app for os x. nice icons too.
as mentioned below it doesn't handle password protected rars properly, for that use unrarx (with the annoyance of having to enter the pw before unpacking).
the problem with stuffit, to reiterate, is that it's too memory intensive/slow and doesen't do rars, use unarchiver instead.
Not 100% perfect. For some reason, it doesn't handle all files that should be supported. Certain password-protected rar files, for example, fail to extract, even when the right password is entered. Really don't know why this happens, so w/in Path Finder I decompress those that don't work with Unarchiver without problem. Any ideas?
I agree. This program should handle parity files. Still, very handy, thank you.
