Transmission Universal Binary

Version: 1.72 || Release Date: 2009-06-16 || License: Other Open Source Developer: Transmission Project 2007

Transmission is a free, lightweight BitTorrent client. It features a simple, intuitive interface on top on an efficient, cross-platform back-end.

Transmission sets initial preferences so things "Just Work", while advanced features like watch directories, bad peer blocking, and the web interface can be configured with just a few clicks. Macworld put it this way: "It's fast, it's extremely lightweight, and — even though it's available for a variety of platforms — it behaves just as you'd expect a Mac program to."

Transmission supports full encryption, file selection, a web-based interface, groups, peer exchange, automatic port forwarding, webseeds, watch directories, tracker editing, global and per-torrent speed limits, and more.

Its code is freely available online and is licensed under either the GNU Public License v2 or the MIT License. The development team welcomes anyone who is interested in contributing code, documentation, translations, or other help.

Indeed, with the addition of DHT support in version 1.7, there's no longer any need to use uTorrent or Vuze etc. to download those difficult torrents. The minimal interface here is simply OS X heaven, yet the preferences and group support allow savvy users to get exactly the behaviour they want 99% of the time.

Transmission 1.60 is very unstable, multiple crashes on torrents that work fine when running 1.52. Worst part is it freezes up entire OSX desktop (running latest updates on Leopard). I recommend staying at 1.52!

1.34 is the latest decent firmware. Anything later seems to drastically decrease download speeds. When I update to the latest version, I get 0-10kb/s and when I downgrade back to 1.34 it rockets back up to 200-500kb's. Weird.

Switched from Azureus/Vuze when I realized that I didn't need 50MB of bloat. Thanks osx.iusethis!

Bittorrent is also an efficient way to transfer files a slow and unreliable wifi connexion. I'm using µTorrent's embedded tracker (windows.iusethis.com) as explained here.

Transmission is nice bit torrent client, BUT current version some how swallowed bandwidth. How come 1,3 GB files become 4.6 GB in the traffic.... doh
