Transmission

Version: 2.84 || Release Date: 2014-07-01 || License: Other Open Source Developer: Transmission Project 2007 | App Owner: arne

Transmission is a free, lightweight BitTorrent client. It features a simple, intuitive interface on top on an efficient, cross-platform back-end.

Transmission sets initial preferences so things "Just Work", while advanced features like watch directories, bad peer blocking, and the web interface can be configured with just a few clicks. Macworld put it this way: "It's fast, it's extremely lightweight, and — even though it's available for a variety of platforms — it behaves just as you'd expect a Mac program to."

Transmission supports full encryption, file selection, a web-based interface, groups, peer exchange, automatic port forwarding, webseeds, watch directories, tracker editing, global and per-torrent speed limits, and more.

Its code is freely available online and is licensed under either the GNU Public License v2 or the MIT License. The development team welcomes anyone who is interested in contributing code, documentation, translations, or other help.

Intel ony? Fine, your out!

If your updated version won't run on 10.4 on a NON_INTEL mac you should state so so that I know not to update. :P

I've tried others (Azureus, Xtorrent, µTorrent (but on Windows - not Mac), even Opera's client) but I always come back to Transmission. It "just works". Azureus is for experts only (I was never able to get it to work). The others have frustrating glitches. Some of them may have more features or may even be faster, but for casual use Transmission is the easiest to use.

Contrary to it's description as lightweight, I have encountered significant hangs on 2 machines, running 10.4.11, and 10.5.7.
Transmission is visually pleasing, and very simple, so i still use it for quick grabs - however it's still quite limited in comparison to Azureus. Most of these features relate to organizing lists of 25+ torrents, or selecting files to DL inside torrents with 25/50/100 files.
Features I miss:
-Click sortable columns when picking files for DL
-Keyboard navigation when picking files for DL
-Network activity graphs with history
-Manually kicking/banning peers
-Viewing selected groups of torrents
-Very compact torrent listings

+1
Very similar to utorrent but has more features.

Download speed does depend 99.9% on the seeders/peers connection....that's why a good test uses THE SAME torrent with a LARGE amount of seeds so that that's not a limiting factor. This way differences on speed can't be blamed on the torrent as they're both the same (basic scientific method 101).
Anyway, good test and I can confirm that Transmission starts up a bit more slowly but otherwise has more features.

miknos, if you want to browse the web and download torrents at the same time, you should try Turtlematic: http://osx.iusethis.com/app/turtlematic
