Version 1.1 | Release Date: 2011-02-10 | Download

Hyperspaces 1.1 is a major update to Hyperspaces that introduces the following new features:

  • Setup each display within each space individually. Have you ever wanted to have a different desktop image on each of your displays for each of your spaces? Go for it!
  • Shows the current space number in the menu bar - check out the gorgeous new icon!
  • Show and hide your desktop icons for each space — perfect for setting up a quiet space with no desktop clutter, or recording that on-screen presentation without the mess;
  • Show and hide the Dock for each space;
  • Setup more than one space at a time. Just hold down shift or command while clicking on a space in the preferences;
  • Preview your customisations right in the preferences;

There are plenty of other fixes and improvements — we really hope you like what we've done!

Version 1.0.5 | Release Date: 2010-01-21 | Download

Fixes the ability to change desktop colors (this was broken in 1.0.4).

Version 1.0.4 | Release Date: 2010-01-19 | Download

This is a recommended upgrade for all users - it resolves many issues, but please read the release notes fully before updating.

  • The space switcher is now shown by default when you click on the Hyperspaces icon in the menubar. Right click to show the menu from previous builds.
  • Fixes the 'Show/hide desktop icons' control being disabled.
  • Fixes the display of the Dock space switcher - it will show up in the right spot at all Dock icon sizes now.
  • If the Hyperspaces icon in the menubar is not shown, using the hotkey to show the space switcher will cause it appear just above the current mouse location.
  • Fixes the font rendering for the space name in the menu bar.
  • Removes the warning when Spaces is disabled. Hyperspaces will continue to run if Spaces is disabled, but you'll only have access to change one space.
  • Fixes the clearing of space background images under Mac OS X 10.5.
  • Many other fixes and improvements.

Please note: this release of Hyperspaces updates your preferences to a newer format. Your existing preferences will be backed up first, but you will not be able to go back to an earlier build once this has happened.

Version 1.0.3 | Release Date: 2009-12-23 | Download
  • Fixes a problem where new users would receive a warning on launching Hyperspaces the first time.
  • Fixes a problem where the animation speed was not respected by some of the desktop decorations.
  • Fixes a problem where Hyperspaces would not quit or work after logging out of an account (either by shutdown or fast user switching)
  • Fixes a problem where the Dock Switcher would not appear in the correct location on multiple monitor setups. I still have a couple of reports that this is not working with certain Dock orientations, so please submit feedback if this affects you.
  • Fixes a problem where the space name could be set to nil - this should not have ever been possible, and won't work anymore. If your space names are set to nil before updating to this build
  • Fixes a problem where the add/remove spaces controls were not disabled when the maximum or minimum number of spaces were reached.
  • Fixes a number of common crashes.
  • Desktop labels will animate again in this build.
  • Improved error reporting - Hyperspaces will now ask you to submit error reports for recoverable errors.
Version 1.0.1 | Release Date: 2009-12-14 | Download
  • Resolves an issue where preferences were not being updated properly, and space settings were lost from older versions
Version 0.8.9 | Release Date: 2009-08-28 | Download

Hyperspaces 1.0 Beta 9

This beta release does not expire. Please report any issues you find via GetSatisfaction.

I consider this build to be very close to 1.0 - I won't be adding any new features for Hyperspaces 1.0, instead focusing on bug fixes.

New and fixed features

  • New Full support for Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard";
  • Fix Next/Previous space hotkeys will now wrap from the first space to the last space, and vice versa;
  • Fix Hyperspaces can now be shown in the Dock, and hidden in the status bar;
  • Fix Restored the ability to turn the menu bar transparency on and off for each space;
  • New When desktop icons are hidden, you can double-click on the desktop to open a new finder window;
  • New Under Advanced in the preferences, you can now tell Hyperspaces to set your system desktop picture when changing spaces. This means that the correct image will show through your translucent menu bar (see below for known issues). Many thanks to Joe Ranieri for the reverse engineering fu that happened here!;
  • New You can now disable Desktop Backgrounds / Core Animation entirely - this is done via the "Advanced" preferences;
  • Fix Many other bug fixes and optimisations.

Known issues

  • Hyperspaces is moving to a newer, more consistent preference format in this build and will migrate your preferences to the newer format. If this kind of change worries you, please keep a backup of your preferences;
  • Tiled and stretched images do not line up with their system desktop counterparts.
  • The desktop label alignment view sometimes does not draw - just select another space in the preferences, and it should come back.
  • Desktop tint colours occasionally cause Hyperspaces to crash.
  • The preferences window goes behind all other windows when changing spaces.

Hyperspaces 1.0 Beta 7

This beta release will expire on August 31, 2009. Please report any issues you find via GetSatisfaction.

I consider this build to be very close to 1.0 - I won't be adding any new features for Hyperspaces 1.0, instead focusing on bug fixes.

New and fixed features

  • New Hyperspaces is fully 64-bit. There is no longer a sub-process to handle hotkeys.
  • Fix Hyperspaces should now correctly save preferences on logout, shutdown and reboot. I am sorry about how long this took to track down and fix.
  • Fix Hyperspaces should no longer draw over the top of applications like Coversutra, DeskShade, GeekTool and other desktop level decorations.
  • Fix The scaling of desktop images should work just the same as the Mac OS X Finder does now.
  • Fix Fixed a number of crashes around the use of colors from the standard Color Palette.
  • Fix The switcher now uses the system highlight color you have set in the Mac OS X "Appearance" preference pane.
  • Fix Many other minor fixes and optimisations.

Known issues

  • There is currently no help, and no manual. It's coming.
  • The switcher flickers when it's showing and hiding.
  • The option "Disable Core Animation for the desktop background" is not entirely finished. Core Animation is still used to render the desktop colors and text.

Hyperspaces 1.0 Beta 6

This preview release will expire on June 1, 2009. Please report any issues you find via GetSatisfaction.

I consider this build to be very close to 1.0 - I won't be adding any new features for Hyperspaces 1.0, instead focusing on bug fixes.

New and fixed features

  • Fix Memory usage is improved under most circumstances.
  • Fix Space switcher will now show the correct highlighting and hover effects.
  • Fix Space switcher now accepts right mouse clicks to switch to a space.
  • Fix The desktop image scaling techniques "Fit to Screen" and "Fill Screen" were reversed - now they are not.
  • Fix When using system desktop pictures, Hyperspaces will respect the settings for each individual display.

Known issues

  • Depending on launch order, Hyperspaces will draw over top of applications that set the desktop such as GeekTool, World Clock, DeskShade and others. You may have some success by launching Hyperspaces before the application you're having troubles with.
Version 1.0 Beta 5 | Release Date: 2009-04-14 | Download

Hyperspaces 1.0 Beta 5

This preview release will expire on June 1, 2009. Please report any issues you find via GetSatisfaction.

I consider this build to be very close to 1.0 - I won't be adding any new features for Hyperspaces 1.0, instead focusing on bug fixes.

New and fixed features

  • New Added the ability to display the Hyperspaces desktop over top of the normal desktop icons ("Draw desktop backgrounds:" in the "General" preferences tab).
  • New Added a new low memory drawing mode for older macs - you can activate this by checking the "Use low memory drawing" checkbox in the "General" preferences tab. This mode does not use Core Animation for desktop images, so they will not animate. Labels and colours should still animate, but may not work correctly.
  • New Added preferences for controlling Growl.
  • New Added preferences for controlling Software Updates.
  • New Removed the option to set the menubar transparency on a per-space basis. This option was causing crashes and problems for many users and there's no "right" way to set this.
  • Fix Hyperspaces should not lose it's preferences on reboot - I need people to test this though.
  • Fix Much more efficient storage, retrieval and drawing of images for space backgrounds and the switcher. You should see drastic improvements when using a large number of spaces.
  • Fix Removed the thin blue line that was drawing next to the Hyperspaces icon in the system status bar.
  • Fix Function keys can now be used as hotkeys.
  • Fix Hyperspaces should no longer "swallow" the 'a' key.
  • Fix Hotkeys should now set and un-set consistently - previously, it was impossible to unset hotkeys properly.

Known issues

  • Desktop images currently draw using the wrong colour profile when using Core Animation (non low memory drawing). Images look slightly lighter than they should.
  • Depending on launch order, Hyperspaces will draw over top of applications that set the desktop such as GeekTool, World Clock, DeskShade and others. You may have some success by launching Hyperspaces before the application you're having troubles with.
