Licence: Shareware ($34.95)
Version 4.3.6 | Release Date: 2010-03-05 | Download
  • Fixed the handling of recently used folders in Carbon applications such as Photoshop, InDesign, Word, Excel and Firefox.
  • Default Folder X works in Google Chrome when attaching files in Gmail, uploading videos to YouTube and other situations in which Ajax or Flash code brings up a file dialog.
  • Default Folder X now uses Sparkle to check for and install updates automatically.
  • Clicking in column headers in the preference pane sorts the list correctly.
  • You can drag any file or folder onto the Default Folder X icon in the Dock to Get Info on it.
  • A new 'Tell a Friend' button in the preference pane creates an email for you in your default mail program so you can tell a friend how great Default Folder X is :)
  • Added a new option to set a minimum default size for the sidebar in all file dialogs. Run Terminal and execute this command: defaults write com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX minimumSize.sidebarWidth 180
  • Worked around a bug that caused a white "ghost" of Default Folder X's toolbar window to appear at seemingly random times.
  • Remembering column sizes and the size of the sidebar was broken in Snow Leopard. It is now fixed.
  • After creating a new folder, the file dialog didn't always switch to show that folder as it should have. This has been fixed.
  • Corrected a problem that could cause Default Folder X to get its state confused, thinking a file dialog was still open when it wasn't. This contributed to problems with rebound and Default Folder X windows showing up at random times.
  • The option to Open and Save to the same folder was getting confused in Carbon applications, causing them to start in the wrong folder. This has been fixed.
  • The Get Info command now works much more smoothly in Leopard and Snow Leopard.
  • Fixed a compatibility problem with PhotoMechanic.
  • Fixed the GetInfo command when running on Tiger.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the Dock menu not to appear when running on Tiger.
  • Changed the sort order for files and folders in the path menu of Open and Save As dialogs so it's consistent with the Finder's sorting.
  • Default Folder X will no longer query the size of disk drives unless "Show disk space" is turned on in the preferences. This helps keep sleeping drives from spinning up.
  • Added a defaults setting to print progress messages to the Console during the OpenMeta upgrade process. In order to turn them on, open Terminal and type this command: defaults write NSGlobalDomain OMUpgradeDebugLevel 1 To turn the progress messages back off, execute this command in Terminal: defaults delete NSGlobalDomain OMUpgradeDebugLevel
  • Fixed a bug so the "Show hidden Finder windows" setting works again.
Version 4.3.5 | Release Date: 2009-12-02 | Download
  • Fixed an error which could leave Default Folder X's controls on-screen after a Save dialog was dismissed.
  • There's now a switch to disable the updating of OpenMeta tags. The latest version of OpenMeta uses different names for its tags, and therefore has to convert all your existing tags to the new format. This can use a lot of CPU time, so you may want to wait and do it while your computer is idle. Note that if you use Default Folder X for OpenMeta tagging, your old tags must be converted before Default Folder X will see them. However, if you only use tagging in a specific context, such as in your email using MailTags, you can safely disable the tag conversion. To turn off tag updating, option-click on the Settings button in Default Folder X's preferences, then turn on the DisableOpenMetaUpgrade checkbox.
Version 4.3.4 | Release Date: 2009-12-01 | Download
  • Default Folder X now remembers the width of the sidebar in Open and Save dialogs. Resize it once and it will be the same size the next time.
  • Solved the problem of the Default Folder X Addition.osax file getting moved to the Trash every time Default Folder X was restarted.
  • A white 'ghost' of Default Folder X's controls no longer appears after a file dialog has been dismissed.
  • Preferences were not always saved when you restarted your Mac. This has been fixed.
  • Default Folder X is now compatible with the latest release of Cinema4D (version 11.528).
  • There's no longer a long delay when you use the Get Info command from within the Default Folder X application or from the menubar menu.
  • If a floating window popped up (in PTHPasteboard, for example) while Default Folder X was displaying its rename dialog or another modal window, the application owning the current Open or Save As dialog could hang. This has been fixed.
  • Default Folder X's logic for remembering and restoring the size and position of file dialogs has been improved.
  • Default Folder X's controls now correctly show and hide themselves in Save As PDF dialogs.
  • Numeric sorting works correctly in hierarchical menus ("Folder 1", then "Folder 2", then "Folder 12").
  • When expanding a Save As dialog using the little triangle next to the filename box, Default Folder X's windows no longer flicker.
  • The keyboard equivalent shown in the Recent Folders menu now has one arrow instead of two when running under Snow Leopard.
  • The appearance and disappearance of the Default Folder X bezel is now smoother.
  • Text is no longer truncated in the Info window of the French version.
  • Default Folder X uses the latest version of OpenMeta.
Version 4.3.3 | Release Date: 2009-11-06 | Download
  • Corrected a bug which could cause Default Folder X to use excessive amounts of CPU time when a file server was mounted on the Desktop under Mac OS 10.5.
  • The shift key now works in the menus for Finder Windows, Disks, and Favorites to reverse the order of the menu items.
  • The installer now automatically starts Default Folder X after installation, and provides a tip on how to get started.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause Default Folder X to stop working in Carbon applications when running under Mac OS 10.4.

  • Default Folder X no longer tries to resolve aliases to offline servers when creating preview images for files and folders.

  • Fixed a problem in which Default Folder X's controls did not hide themselves when an options dialog was invoked from an Open or Save As dialog (Adobe Fireworks CS3 and other applications were affected).

  • In Snow Leopard, Default Folder X would sometimes draw a white square in the menubar where its icon was supposed to be. This has been fixed.

  • Corrected a performance problem that made Default Folder X's own "Get Info" command bring up its file dialog very slowly.
  • Added an option to automatically open all of your favorite folders in the Finder when you switch folder sets. Option click on the Settings button in the Default Folder X preference pane and turn on "OpenActiveFolderSet".
  • Added a "lefty" option to put the toolbar on the left side of Open and Save dialogs instead of on the right. Option click on the Settings button in the Default Folder X preference pane and turn on "ToolbarOnLeft".
  • Fixed the alignment and spacing of buttons in the Info panel below Open dialogs.
  • Macintoshes based on the PowerPC G3 processor are once again supported.
Version 4.3 | Release Date: 2009-08-17 | Download

Default Folder X 4.3 delivers compatibility with Snow Leopard as well as a number of improvements and fixes. If you are installing or planning to install Snow Leopard, please make sure to upgrade your copy of Default Folder X first. A compatibility problem in older versions of Default Folder X could cause crashes with Snow Leopard.

  • Full support for Snow Leopard, including running in 64 bit applications and support for garbage-collected memory management.
  • Corrected a problem on Snow Leopard that could cause Default Folder X's hierarchical path menu to freeze or crash.
  • Fixed a bug which could cause DFPreviewServer to consume excessive amounts of CPU time and memory. This occurred when previewing very large files that Mac OS X incorrectly identifies as text files.
  • You can list items in hierarchical menus chronologically rather than alphabetically by holding down the Control key.
  • Corrected a problem in the "Make Save dialogs automatically default to the current document's folder" setting that would cause Default Folder X to default to the top level of your hard disk or your home folder in certain applications (including Address Book).
  • Save As sheets are now automatically resized to fit the screen when you switch from a large display to a smaller one.
  • You can globally set a minimum file dialog size and column width. Use these commands in terminal to set the values: defaults write com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX minimumSize.width 800 defaults write com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX minimumSize.height 600 defaults write com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX minimumSize.columnWidth 250 Change the numbers at the end of the commands to the sizes you want to use (in pixels).
  • There is now a way to override the time before menu previews zoom to full size. In Terminal, use this command to change the value (the default value is 1.5 seconds): defaults write com.stclairsoft.DefaultFolderX menuZoomDelay 1.5 Change the "1.5" in the line above to the number of seconds you want for the delay. Note that you need to turn Default Folder X off and back on again for this change to take effect.
  • Eliminated a problem that could cause custom controls in Save dialogs to get scrambled (this affected Graphic Converter as well as other applications).
  • Default Folder X's "New Folder" command would not work in some applications when creating a folder inside a folder that was reached by double-clicking on an alias. This has been fixed.
Version 4.2.1 | Release Date: 2009-07-07 | Download
  • Default Folder X now gives you file previews in its menus. As you mouse through Default Folder X's hierarchical menus from the menu bar, you'll see a preview of each file. Hover there for a couple of seconds and the preview will enlarge for a better view.
  • In Open and Save As dialogs, Default Folder X now puts a "Computer" item at the top of the folder hierarchy in the path menu.
  • New Spotlight tags were sometimes not written out to OpenMeta's shared recent tag list. This has been fixed.
  • Spotlight tag completion now ignores differences in diacritical marks.
  • You can now use Path Finder as a helper application for the Get Info command.
  • Support has been added for Fluid site-specific browsers when they're running as menu extras.
  • Previews now correctly follow aliases so that a preview of the original file is shown when you select an alias in an Open dialog.
  • When two folders with the same name are in a menu, the menu items for them will now include the name of the parent folders that uniquely identify those folders (Default Folder X used to just show their immediate parent folders, but sometimes those had the same names too).
  • Fixed an AppleScript problem that would cause Preview to print a PDF file over and over again if you selected the file in the Finder and chose Print from the File menu.
  • Changed the rebound feature so that filenames with a ':' character are recognized correctly in Cocoa applications.
  • Corrected a problem that would result in Default Folder X not loading in multiple running applications that had the same creator signature (when running both Photoshop CS3 and CS4 at the same time, for instance).
  • Default Folder X was saving empty Finder comments, resulting in Spotlight attaching empty com.apple.metadata:kMDItemFinderComment attributes to some files. This has been fixed.
  • Fixed compatibility problems with python-based applications that use appscript.
  • Added support for 64-bit PowerPC applications to the scripting addition.
  • Corrected inconsistent rebound behavior on network server drives.

  • A new AppleScript command, ClearRecentFolders, clears the list of recently used folders in the currently active folder set.
  • This release is compatible with the latest development build of Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
  • If you use "Hold down the option key while choosing Open to display all files" in the Advanced settings, you will also be shown all invisible folders if you hold down the option key while selecting Save As.

  • Worked around a bug in the Mac OS 10.4 Finder which would cause Default Folder X's Finder window list to show no windows if the Finder is hidden.

  • Corrected a problem that could result in Default Folder X crashing when you logged out or restarted your Mac.
  • Changed Default Folder X to eliminate a conflict with Hazel in which Default Folder X would change a file’s label back to after Hazel changed it.
  • Partially worked around an AppleScript bug in Firefox. This bug prevents other applications from getting the URL of the current page from Firefox when Default Folder X is running, meaning that applications like LittleSnapper and EagleFiler cannot take snapshots of web pages. If you still encounter this problem after updating to Default Folder X 4.1.1, try quitting and relaunching Firefox or add Firefox to Default Folder X’s exception list in the Advanced tab of its preferences.

  • The exception list did not work correctly if you added an application while the "Show all file extensions" preference was turned on in the Finder. This has been fixed.

  • Added the AJA Control Panel as an excluded application in Default Folder X's default preferences. It does not handle AppleScript correctly and therefore crashes when Default Folder X tries to communicate with it.
Version 4.0.6 | Release Date: 2008-06-05 | Download

  • Fixed a bug that caused Default Folder X's Option-F shortcut to be ignored in Carbon applications running on Mac OS 10.4.
