VLC

Version: 2.1.5 || Release Date: 2014-07-26 || License: GPL Developer: VideoLAN | App Owner: gedasg

For DivX, VCD, DVD, MPEG, AVI, FLV, WAV, WMV, OGG.

VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. The most prominent additions to version 0.8.6 are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, and a full-screen.

Simply the most singularly-useful media playing app out there - I think both on Windows and on the Mac.
Some users complain of bugs but personally I have had few issues - all of which were solved using the method listed in the post Below :)
It also has a tonne of extra features that hardly anyone seems to stumble across - i seem to find a new use for VLC every few weeks! (see the Streaming/Exporting Wizard for some ideas)
Thanks VideoLAN!

If any of you get the following error at launch:
"main: You cannot run the MacOS X module as an extra interface. Please read the README.MacOSX.rtf file."
you're not alone (there are multiple threads about this on the vlc forums - most of them unanswered).

Well the answer is that the pref files sometimes get corrupted during upgrades/updates (I've had the error ever since I upgraded to 0.8.6.c).
So you have to delete the VLC folder and the org.videolan.vlc.plist from ~/Library/Preferences.

Now it should run as normal...no more error pop-ups on launch (new uncorrupted prefs will be created when run again)

If they could only fix the bugs, it'd be the best.

great app, but I still feel b was more stable than c. Am I alone on this?

Installing the Universal Binary on an Intel Mac breaks the application shortcut for all users who aren't administrators. Download the dedicated Intel verson instead.

Great app, BTW.

This may come as a no-brainer for some, but I also was delighted to know that it allowed my mom to play her store-bought Asian-coded DVDs from the Philippines on her G4/400, with no special steps required - I just fired up VLC and hit Play. Wow.

version 0.8.6c released today.
