Version: 2.1.5 || Release Date: 2014-07-26 || License: GPL Developer: VideoLAN | App Owner: gedasg

VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. The most prominent additions to version 0.8.6 are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, and a full-screen.

Sad to say that it crashes every time I try and use it... Using a MacBook Pro Intel Dual Core 2Ghz, 2GB RAM

It's a nice app without doubt and has always worked well when i was on Windows...
But the Mac version seems to have a lot of bugs.
Nearly everytime i play a file errors pop up or it instantly crashes.

Best? Maybe. Perfect? Far from it. It's pretty buggy on my cleanly installed PowerBook 1.5GHz G4 maxed-out with RAM. Most bugs just result in a pinwheel followed by crash when I try to do mundane things like change the volume, just ahead, etc.

macrabbit has a very nice iconset for vlc :)

VLC pwns all except MPlayer. It's efficient, stable, has playlists, support for a variety of formats (H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4/XviD, Theora, AAC, AC3/A52, and containers like MKV and OGM). The latest version introduces support for WMV9!

Bulletproof performance with any format, but nothing close to Quicktime player interface-wise.

Very nice program. Lots of formats, fast, and excellent subtitle support.

I still prefer MPlayer though. It's faster by a HUGE margin. Only "downside" is it's run in the terminal (unless you add a GUI).

Fantastic, and FAR superior to quicktime.
Fed up of loadsa vids like avi's not playing with quicktime? chances are they'll run with vlc

Got this one in the app folder for use later, maybe.

I wish quicktime to do everything VLC can because i hate have multiple players
