VLC

Version: 2.1.5 || Release Date: 2014-07-26 || License: GPL Developer: VideoLAN | App Owner: gedasg

For DivX, VCD, DVD, MPEG, AVI, FLV, WAV, WMV, OGG.

VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. The most prominent additions to version 0.8.6 are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, and a full-screen.

amazing app.Plays anything you throw at it.

This has the highest compatibility of any player I've tried for OS X (including Mplayer 1 & 2). I also like the interface better than either of the Mplayers. So, for those reasons, this is my media player.

Couple of complaints though... the latest release seems to be a step backwards as far as secondary display support. The option to default to second display on full screen doesn't seem to work anymore (I have to manually reset it everytime) and the full screen button has been moved from the playlist to the player window, which means its now inaccessible when the player window is full screen on the secondary display.

Also, the "folders in the playlist" idea is kind of cool, but it screws up random play when dragging and dropping nested folders into the playlist window. Minor gripe, but it takes more time to create usable playlists this way.

Anyways, other than that... this is the best player out there. The only thing I've run across that it can't play are some .rm and .rmvb files.

Love it!

I agree with Chris, between this and quicktime you can view 95% of the vidio out there on the internet. It's by no means perfect. The audio on AVI files can be quirky at times (compaired to wintels playing the same files) but it's the best non-mac format player I've ever used. It's also superior to windows media player for watching MPEGs on the PC. It doesnt' suffer from the same audio sync issues that windows media player has.

sadly, quicktime doesn't always work. this is free and it plays things quicktime won't. thumbs up.
