VLC

Version: 2.1.5 || Release Date: 2014-07-26 || License: GPL Developer: VideoLAN | App Owner: gedasg

For DivX, VCD, DVD, MPEG, AVI, FLV, WAV, WMV, OGG.

VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. The most prominent additions to version 0.8.6 are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, and a full-screen.

When my default player (mplayerx) fails. This is the address to go to. There's almost nothing it cannot play back. It even deals with partially damaged files.

Just found out my recent version (1.1.3 intel 64-bit) now very elegantly plays RAR-archived files without any add-ons.
thumbs up!

Why I dont like VLC:

1. In order for any settings to reflect changes you have to reopen the app -- ridiculous for year 2010.
2. Floating playlist -- disturbing, cant remember its size after quitting the app, always unfolds for 50% of the screen and always on the way.
3. Cant automatically detect sound output device changes.
4. Cant remember play position after quitting.
5. Cant load sequential files automatically.
6. No way to rotate through crop formats with 1 key or shortcut.
7. Fast-forwarding for less than 10 seconds causes to jump several seconds BACK instead of forward.

wrong version/source code download problem still persists.

The VLC forums are saying this version is crashing OS X 10.6.3 anyway.

latest version (1.1.0-rc) download only gets the source tree...? is there a pre-built version of this release candidate in a .dmg or .zip?

nothing wrong with beta versions, but it doesn't quite seem 'in the spirit' of iusethis.com to just provide a link to the source tree (especially for those using AppFresh, where most upgrades are a couple of clicks)

amazing. can't imaging my life without this app. The export wizard could have been made simpler though. Maybe a quick mode would do the trick.

Decent, but lacks multiple video windows.
Therefore I prefer niceplayer now.

There's a 64bit specific version - just tried it but found it tops out the CPU for the first 10 sec of video before settling to 9% of CPU.

Are we supposed to post beta versions here or just stable releases? According to the site the latest version is 9.9.
