I still use this version 1.0. It's 4 years old, but still unique. Jesse, the developer, comes up with great ideas, but unfortunately just can't seem to stick with them. Don't get me wrong, he's an extremely nice and hard working guy. But sometimes ideas don't need much improving. WriteRoom eventually evolved into something completely different.

The first version of WriteRoom used a non-document model, meaning you never had to deal with any document filing. No, open the app, create a new window, write, close the app, open the app again, and there are your documents. Simple, fast and effective. No filing needed! The developer moved away from this very unique idea to something generic: WriteRoom as a text and rtf document editor with full screen mode.

I agree with the comment of th_f. The lack of support for new language features in Snow Leopard is part of the reasons why I wrote FocusWrite.

I cannot understand why they do not bring it up to Snow Leopard Standards. The plugin to switch to write room doesn't work and there are also no language-settings for "quotes" (that almost all non-english users need). What a shame, that there is no new version. It could be a must-have app.

To some extent, Google docs can also do what WriteRoom does: set the background of your document to black, and turn on full screen mode. :)

In addition, you'll get other Google docs features, eg: revision history (useful if you're writing a diary for instance).

Because WriteRoom is part of MacHeist, I downloaded it. Seems like a very useful program. Typing without interruptions. Looking forward to a bigger document where this can be handy.

Pity WriteRoom moved on, in my opinion. It has way too many features these days. Rich Text is a waste of time, for me, but I guess I can understand why some people like it. I also much preferred the "file-less" mentality of the original. You just never had to worry about your stuff or where it was located.

The screenshot here and on the homepage don't give a good idea of what the app looks like full screen.
This one is better:

(too big for iusethis unfortunately.)

Would someone please tell me what's "not Leopard compatible" about this program? Aside from the bad choice of key bindings to go to full screen (something you only need to access once, from the menu), I can't see any problems with it.

The new "Edit in WriteRoom" feature is nice, but it has some limits:
- in Safari: can't edit a message in gmail.
- in Mail.app: accentuated letters are messed up if format is rich text (fine if plain text).
