Xingtone

Version: 5 || Release Date: 2007-02-01 || License: Shareware ($19.95) Developer: Xingtone

Xingtone Ringtone Maker 5 is currently the only application for Mac that can generate real-tone ringtones for your mobile phone. But it doesn't stop there. It will upload the tune to it's server and then sends your phone a text message with a download link. In minutes you can have a different ringtone for every caller, without paying $2 each. Make a ringtone out of any MP3 or supported audio file.

I spent about 2 hours trying to use this program to get a Ringtone on my Treo 650 (Sprint CDMA). At that point, I had used all of my 10 free trial uploads, to no avail. Needless to say, I won't be buying the program. I've been generally disappointed with the Treo, as well as Sprint, so I can't say the software is entirely to blame, but it definitely has some major flaws. Not bugs, but deliberate restrictions built into the service that make it essentially unusable. Namely:

-Once you upload a file to their server, its only there for about 10 minutes before the link is deactivated.
-The page where the ringtone is located can only be accessed once. Upon your first download attempt, the link deactivated. (None of my download attempts worked on the first try, which is to say they never worked at all.)
-You cannot access the ringtone file using a non-cellphone browser. By the third or fourth try, I knew what the URL for the actual file should be, but upon trying to download it to my computer so I could transfer it to the phone, I found the port was blocked, and subsequently the link was disabled.
