I downloaded this recently, just so I could use the Tenplustwo widget for 43folders.com style productivity dashes. I really wish somebody would port that to Dashboard.

Well, in addition to the name change, some of my big problems started before the Yahoo buy-out. Back before Konfabulator was cross-platform, it really felt like a mac app, and I had high hopes for not much changing... but when it started supporting windows, the huge majority of its userbase was windows, so Mac support/features/flavor sort of got put on the back burner. This only got worse after Yahoo.

I agree with inik about superior functionality though, for most of the same reasons.

Way, way, way, WAY better than Dashboard!

Similar idea, really. Little floating widgets that, um, do stuff. The widgets are Javascript, so they're pretty easy to make.

The thing is, this program REALLY thinks through how a Widget should work. They can be layered as floating windows, stick 'em to your desktop, or hide them in the "Head's Up Display" region (a la Dashboard), or just use 'em like normal windows. That alone makes it far more useful.

Add to that the ability to alter transparency for each widget (so your floating widget doesn't obscure a small screen too much) and you've got a pretty nice setup.

Unfortunately, yeah, the Yahoo buy changed the name and sucked the liveliness out of this product. It's hard to love "Yahoo Widget Engine", whereas "Konfabulator" was full of mystery and wonder. Too bad, but it's still the same great app underneath.

I agree that this app used to be great, but lost all its soul after the Yahoo! purchase. I still haven't found anything that will provide me the functionality that I need, so I still use it, but it's a dead app to me.

I really enjoyed using Konfabulator, and felt it was superior to Dashboard in most ways. However, when Yahoo bought the app and then was reported to have turned in internet users to the Chinese government - I stopped using it.
