I'm a professional photographer (http://blog.ex-ps.com) and user of Photomatix for pictures that need a bigger dynamic range, not to make things "look cool." I tried this software out of interest in alternatives. The fact that it is free is impressive and uncommon. However, you get what you pay for as it not robust at all.
It would be fun if you wanted to have a quick edit for snapshots, but I would not recommend using it for anything serious.
