I still remember when Marathon was first released, and I thought "Oh no, another FPS I can't play" (both skill and simulator sickness). Well, a few years later I tried M2, and loved it - it was the only FPS that didn't make me simulator sick. I still enjoy the series because it melds storytelling with the game. Not just another shoot-em-up.
