@brh : Yes, you're right, the initial intention is indeed to save load-time rather then disk-space, but you forgot one important thing: Nowadays, SSD's become more and more popular - and quite contrary to your statements, this kind of mass-storage is all but cheap, in fact its very expensive from costs per GB.
Therefore Squeezer is a fantastic tool to save some bucks if you (like me) use SSD's -ever GB saved here is fantastic, considering that the average price is something in the 2,5-3 $ area per GB.
