Simple, effective, free. Perfect!

I love Nocturne, it allows me to make my screen dim enough to use in the middle of the night without inverting or removing colors.
Tip: in preferences, uncheck "invert", uncheck "monochrome", set the white "color filter" to a darker color than white (also set brightness to minimum if you're on a notebook, to conserve battery.
Terrific idea! I tend to use my computer right before I go to bed. Studies have shown that, just like sunlight in the morning, working at a bright screen at bedtime can interrupt your body's production of melatonin; it's like sitting in front of a light therapy box. I had been using my monitor's brightness and contrast controls, but they're a PITA, and the default color scheme is hard to see on a dim screen.
Nocturne to the rescue: Not only is it nice and dim, but the color scheme reminds me that I'm in "bed" mode, not "surf" mode. It's a great psychological cue. As for keyboard shortcuts, QuicKeys etc. make a nice workaround.

Wow, I had no idea there was anything this comprehensive available. This program is excellent, everyone should trial it.
