A third party paper analyzing the security and methodology of Skype was presented at Black Hat Europe 2006. It analyzed Skype and made these observations:

Simple yet highly functional, Vienna has shrugged off its old brushed-metal interface. RSS reading is a crowded field, but Vienna does just what I want, and I see no reason to play the field.

Version 2.2.2 has a bug in smart folders if using non ansi characters (eg: accents, umlauts), you can read about it and download a build that fixes it in the forums

That is a great idea -- the old functionality that everyone loves would be a teaser to get people who need more sophisticated VPN options to upgrade. I would love to see this happen.

What an endless debate over a few euros. Give the guy a break and let him earn a few bucks.

@belisle: You and I don't disagree. The seller sets the price; the customer decides whether or not they'll buy at that price. I'm just sharing detailed information on my buying decision. I don't expect €60 of potential income to change guru's mind, but now he has more data.

@guru: I'd propose that the shareware version (a) doesn't allow reconnection, (b) doesn't provide SSH tunneling, and © displays a nag for minimum 10 seconds before allowing you to dismiss it, increasing to a maximum of 60 seconds over time. If you're willing to put up with that annoyance, you obviously value money more than time + convenience.

With that, good luck. I'll check back someday to see how it all turns out.

@guru: I think one or some combination of these options would be good:

1) The nag screen shows up at launch and stays for 20 seconds or whatever, then goes away for good. I don't like being interrupted at seemingly random times.
2) The nag screen shows up for a few seconds whenever the user connects (but not also at disconnect).
3) If you want something persistent, try a tiny, unintrusive icon that suggests unregistered (some play on an € sign, maybe?) next to the to the Shimo icon in the menubar.

Purp's ideas are pretty good too, although I vote against quitting after one use. That has the potential to be overly annoying in a different way. I think showing a screen at each connection is a good alternative to quitting. Disabling features is reasonable (since it's so common in shareware), but I think it'd be even better if you allowed full functionality for 30 days or whatever, and then crippled some features.

In general, I was probably going to buy it after I tested it for a few days. But with that obnoxious screen, there's no way I'm going to spend any time trying it out. I'll reconsider that if you come up with something for 2.0.3.

1) nag screen: did you notice (and I very much hope this won't change!) that you actually can drag and drop the nag screen to the bottom left or right corner so that it hardly interrupts with your workflow. It is even ignored by exposé! I think, this way people can easily test this software without being bothered by the nag screen.

2) why I would vote for ONE version WITHOUT nag screen and limited functionality as the standard with an option to pay for the other less frequently used features: Many of us suffer from that CiscoVPN connection problems where only a restart of the VPN (via terminal) helps. While I have no clue why it is like this, I figured out it happens way less often in Shimo 2. This is why it would be nice to benefit from the better version 2 when only basic functionality is needed.

Good News: In Shimo 2.0.3 you will be able to minimize the nag screen!!! So stay tuned for the new version...

If I put my laptop to sleep, when I wake it up Shimo sometimes thinks it's still connected, this is pretty annoying. I like the software, and I'd consider paying for it if it reconnected when I brought my laptop in and out of sleep. Just my $.02.

Related to what cuban321 says, is it possible to have an option which automatically re-connects with the last used/default profile? After sleep, the connection most often breaks, so it might be convenient to automatically re-connect after a wake-up.

I see that guru has ceased to use or feature iusethis.com on Shimo's website. I guess direct customer feedback was no longer desirable. Pity.

r2008a won't allow you to put a matlab icon on the Dock (not even StartMatlab) -- it seems that Mac support is slipping backwards from an already pretty basic level. I sometimes wonder if the 'a' and 'b' in the version numbers are for 'alpha' and 'beta'.

Transmission has completely recovered from the 0.9x wobbles, and recent versions are really excellent.

Now with preliminary Proxy-to-tracker support (does NOT use proxy for peer-to-peer communication, only to tracker) in nightly builds (as of 1.22+) (http, SOCKS4, and SOCKS5 support).
Also, there is now a blocklist in the shipping builds (but it must be updated manually).

Transmission just keeps getting better.
