Comment and replies on Transmission:
Amen. Switced from Azureus purely because of the simplicity! Hugging whoever registred this app
An absolutely amazing application. Looks deliciously aqua, has next to no footprint on my 1.2 G4 iBook and downloads at great speeds. Has some problems with some private trackers cough OiNK cough but it's still in beta so that should fix :)
Transmission gives you pretty much all the BT functionality that you need for a quick DL and wraps it up in a gorgeous little package - perfect little app.
I've never been able to get download speeds over 3k/second with Transmission, yet when I try the exact same torrents with Azureus I get speeds at least ten times faster, if not better. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
It is a great software, that handles most torrent needs. There are quite a few complex things that it canot handle, but for those I keep Azureus as a backup.
Definitely give this a try, and I am sure you will fall in love with it.
Soooo very easy to use and very very simple. No frills, no extra crap, no memory hogging. It just works.
There have been some rather annoying bugs over the releases, but the latest release seems to work pretty flawlessly (so far, anyways).
@bruce: Check that both apps uses ports that are open on your router/firewall
Transmission is to Torrents what NewsFire is to RSS reading. Absolutely cocoa-gorgeous!
Only lacking header-encryption like uTorrent or azureus. Otherwise this app simply rocks! Everything a mac app should look and act like.
It's grrrrreat!
All it's missing (for a complete switch from Azureus) is SafePeer like IP-blocking
Magnificent torrent app, nice clean interface. Only feature I wish it had was the ability to only download specific files from a torrent!
clean, fast, does what it is supposed to do. enough said.
amazing application.
I really wish they would just add all the features that Azureus has, frankly. I personally use probably only half of them, but everybody uses a slightly different 50%, there aren't really any useless features... I think it could be done while keeping the interface uncluttered (hide extra features in extra panes / windows that aren't enabled by default) and the speed high (azureus' poor performence / meory usage is caused by it being a java app more than anythign else, I think).
At the very least they should add the ones, like choosing files, that probably 90% of users use.
Even better there should be a plugin architecture so that users could create these features, and everybody would get exactly what they want without the developer having to do all the work.
Transmission would be great......if it obeyed the BitTorrent protocol and wasn't so buggy.
Mac BitTorrent clients are substantially behind their Windows counterparts when it comes to features. Transmission is a nice, no nonsense client that isn't resource itensive like Azureus.
The problem is that Transmission has been banned from several torrent sites for not obeying the BitTorrent protocol -- it ignores the tracker's update interval and hammers the tracker instead.
A second problem also responsible for its banning involves a bug somewhere in the program that causes it to report uploading 16.7TB of data.
The developers of the program are very unfriendly and arrogant and refuse to fix their program or even acknowledge it was broken, unlike the developers of other BT clients (such as Ludde, the developer of uTorrent) who usually go out of their way to fix their client.
I like it. It is light weight and has more features than the official Mac BitTorrent Client.
beautiful GUI and uses no noticible resources, but development is slow, it is being banned on many private trackers, and it's missing many needed features (like selective downloading, DHT, multitracking).
I like this program simply for the fact that I only use it on my mac book pro. Azareus is still rocking on my PC which is great, because that's where I'm downloading 8~9 gigs of stuff. Transmission works great for my MBP because I'm download 1 movie or album at a time, so don't really need to use any advanced features. If you want real control and information about your torrent app, use azareus, but if you just need a lite weight app that will get the job done with little system resourses, transmission will do.
doesn't have all the azurues features but runs cleaner and with less cpu/mem usage
EDIT: as mentioned below, banned by some trackers so have gone back to using Azureus

It's a beautiful piece of software. BitTorrent is a reasonably complicated system and so, so many tools expose that complexity to the end user. Transmission is a proper, featureless Download Manager. It's stripped back and built exactly the way BitTorrent clients should be.
