Leopard-compatible app that sleeps the display instantly: Sleep Display Leopard
Comment and replies on Quicksilver:
I was having repeated frozen windows, apps not responding. Needed frequent force quits, restarts. After reading alpha & geira's comments here, I realized the glitches could be from Quicksilver. Uninstalled Quicksilver, then did another restart. No more problems.
When uninstalling apps, remember to delete application support files & preference files. It's best to do this manually. Uninstaller apps often leave files behind. Check in Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support; Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences; Macintosh HD > Users > username > Library > Application Support; Macintosh HD > Users > username > Library > Preferences.
I have found that spotlight in Leopard works just as well for basic application launching
just one thing to say... i feel handicapped on any mac which doesnt have this... and i mean, really handicapped... disable spotlight, forget those itunes controllers, forget menubar utilities, forget calc, forget image converter, forget anything... quicksilver ROCKS!
Hi, just to let you guys know; there are alpha releases being built at: http://code.google.com/p/blacktree-alchemy/ -- these are alphas, but to be honest, they work significantly better under Leopard, many many bugs are fixed. a3 needs manual hacking to get working, but it is worth it IMO.
Comment and replies on Smultron:
Appearance & behavior of Smultron are extremely customizable. Unlike WYSIWYG editors with pre-set buttons, you can create your own menus & shortcuts. Store code snippets & page templates that you use frequently. This makes coding so much faster. Modify the menus as your knowledge of coding grows. Edit files on a web server by connecting an ftp app to Smultron (works with Cyberduck). User manual is easy to understand. App is frequently updated. Developer responds to questions, improves app based on user feedback & suggestions.
Comment and replies on Safari:
Safari fans can get some useful plugins and apps at

I prefer Camino; for extensions, themes, applications, etc see

3.0 beta is pretty sweet. still has the brushed metal, but the tabs to new window thing is pretty cool, and it seems to load pages a bit faster and it handles tabs MUCH better. No more beach ball after three tabs are opened. I switched from camino to safari, so I think it's probably the best browser for mac if you don't need extensions. It also has spell check, but it may have always had that...
download the beta at: http://apple.com/safari
After I have installed this new version 3.0b of Safari, a few Dashboard widgets do not work: IP Locator, Amazon Art and Dicionário (a Portuguese language dictionary).
Coincidence? Hmmm... I'm not so sure.
Anybody's able to explain this?
yeah, that happened to me too. the solution (I think) is to download the latest version of webkit from http://nightly.webkit.org and drag that to your applications folder. This worked with mailplane, but there was some configuration thing in the preferences that allowed me to choose webkit, so I'm not sure if it will fix all your problems.
As with all updates of expandable applications, be aware of Safari 3.0b might be incompatible to previously installed 3rd party software (input managers, SIMBL bundles, etc.). In my case SafariStand (2.0b16) prevented Safari 3.0b from loading any website at all. Also I couldn't close Safari's windows because Taboo.bundle was installed.
Although the new Safari features are quite useful I'm pretty used to Stand's features and switched back to Safari 2.0.4 now, waiting for my 3rd party extensions to be updated as well (which I think is similar to FF users regarding their desired extensions).
Some people stated after trying and finally uninstalling 3.0b their previous installed Safari 2.x was gone. I can't second this. However I packed Safari 2.0.4 into a .zip archive before installing the 3.0b., my old Safari.zip was still in tha application folder. I dunno if that's the reason why I found 2.0.4 again after I did uninstall the beta?
Finally Safari warns you that you're closing more than one tab when you quit accidentally! Minor change but it is incredibly useful.
After I have installed Safari 3.0b, a few Dashboard widgets do not work anymore. It happened with IP Locator, Amazon Art and Dicionário (a Portuguese language dictionary). And other users have been reporting this problem with more widgets.
The Unofficial Apple Weblog has a post about this subject. You may read it here:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/06/12/safari-3-heads-up-your-widgets-may-break/
With 11 widgets and the Debug menu on (turned on with Safari Enhancer 3.3.1) I haven't had any problems in 5-6 hours of use on 3 different macs.
Noticeably faster than "standard" 2.0.4 version, however it also breaks too many widgets to be useful
.
To uninstall: the .dmg file you downloaded to install safari3beta also contains a safari3uninstaller.pkg
Just run that to revert back to the stable 2.0.4 release you had before.
Worth the download for better handling with tabs. Not the flashing "new window stuff" but the fact that it now won't freeze up on older machines when you have more than two tabs open.
I've been using it since it came out and it's been running great. Love the new features too! :)
I have to use Safari cuz Firefox's prestanda on mac sucks (at least on a macbook), maybe it will become better after I've upgraded the RAM, but I think I'm already very happy with Safari, with Inquisistor it can compete with FF
Safari, you've finally come of age.
I was a hardcore Camino user for the past couple of years because the version of Safari/WebKit that shipped with Tiger really sucked. But the page rendering and compatibility in Safari 3.0.x has improved by leaps and bounds, and the way you can drag tabs to reorder them or even drag them between windows is really nice. It sometimes stops interpreting my middle-clicks as "open link in new tab", but other than that it's pretty good. I haven't noticed any serious memory leaks so far.
Camino's going to have to play catch-up now. I still keep it on reserve for complicated Ajax sites like Google pages, but Safari has reclaimed its place as my primary browser.
